A CEO is responsible for making major decisions for a company, which means they have to be in good shape and be at least fairly health. The decisions that they make affect each and every person in a company, as there is a trickle-down effect. If they make a bad decision, the company may suffer or even go under. This can lead to employees being laid off, or could even lead to the company completely failing. On the other side of things, if they do a great job, make good decisions and good deals, then the company may thrive, providing opportunities for every single person that is working for the company.
Because of this, it is imperative that a CEO be healthy, although there is a lot of debate over whether a potential new CEO should be forced to undergo a physical or not. It makes a lot of sense to require a physical for any man or woman that is considered as a candidate for the CEO position of any given company, but the matter is quite controversial. A company may have been searching long and far, only to come up empty, but may have found the absolute perfect person for the job. This person may have all of the qualifications, a well-developed skill set, as well as a ton of experience running a similar type of company. If that person is in poor health, and there was in fact this mandatory physical, with the results coming out negatively, the company may be in a huge bind. Executive recruiter Dennis Carey has pointed out that companies sometimes invest millions of dollars into finding a new CEO.
They would have found the person that is perfect for their company, but may not be able to hire them because of this situation. However, it goes without saying that any company that finds a candidate like this, who they have a strong feeling will benefit everyone in the company, will go ahead and hire that person.
While it is a great idea to make potential CEO’s go ahead and get a physical, simply so the company knows where their health stands, it should not be the ax that cuts a potential candidate out of the race. While many companies do not even require a physical, it would be a great idea to at least require a physical to be conducted, or at least a recent one that the person has obtained on their own, with no restrictions on hiring.
