New York University’s Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) campus has created a wonderful experience and massive opportunities for its student. The college attracts excellent talent from all over the world and instills the American education style in the Middle East. Founded in 2008, New York University Abu Dhabi is well known for its research and liberal arts.
It began its operation in a temporary site in downtown Abu Dhabi where it held its conferences, workshops as well as cultural events. Led by Vice Chancellor, Alfred Bloom, the Swarthmore College former president, the Campus began by teaching subjects like in science and arts. NYUAD started its first learning program with 150 students and around 45 professors. New York University ambitions through its president, John Sexton is to hit over 2,000 students in the next ten years at NYUAD.
The new permanent New York University Abu Dhabi campus is located in Marina district, Saadiyat Island, Abu Dhabi. The 40-acre New York University Abu Dhabi main campus at Saadiyat Island was planned and designed by Uruguayan architect, Rafael Vinoly. The campus was financed entirely by the UAE government and constructed by Al-Futtaim Group Carillion Company. Its facilities include:
- Laboratories and research centers
- Academic institutions and state-of-art-classrooms equipped with video conferencing equipment
- Library and information technology centers
- Modern sports and recreation facilities
- Students and staff residential housing
- Gallery centres
New York University Abu Dhabi selectively admits talented students from all over the world. NYUAD held its first inauguration ceremony for 140 students from 40 different countries on 25th May 2014 with former US President, Bill Clinton, as the guest speaker. The student selection at NYUAD is highly competitive with close to 2,500 applications done every year. However, only 161 students enrolled in 2015 and 151 students in 2016. The classes in some faculty have few students with some having less than 15. Many of its students receive financial aids from the government to fund their education at the campus.
Known for the liberal arts and research work, the New York University Abu Dhabi campus has 22 academic areas. These areas culminate in Bachelors of Arts as well as Science and include:
- Arts and Humanities
- Social Science
Also, students are expected to assume one of the core courses that include either in literature, arts, natural science and social studies. Most of the NYUAD professors are sourced from within and outside UAE. For example, Professor Horta from Budapest is in literature lecturer, Ruben Polendo teaches theatre, and Kwame Appiah teaches philosophy and Law. Also, there is the award-winning chemistry Professor, Pance Naumov and Professor Elias Khoury teaching modern Arabic literature among others.
